What you need A site plan with the inlets, culverts, driveway mouths and sight lines marked; a can of marker paint; the operator briefed on the four cases.

Steps

  1. Mark the inlets, culvert mouths, driveway mouths and intersection sight lines on the ground before the first snow. Paint, not a note in a folder.
  2. Choose the storage area first, and choose it for drainage: the meltwater has to leave without crossing pavement.
  3. Plow toward the storage area on every pass, so the row never has to be moved twice.
  4. Re-check the sight lines after each storm, not once a season.
  5. After the first melt, walk the site and find where the water went. That is the only honest test of the placement.

The argument the manual will make

The manual holds that the fix for repeated ice at one location is a painted marker rather than another briefing, because the failure recurs at the same place, which means the information is knowable and simply not where the operator is looking. Training fades; paint does not.
